The other day I was having a conversation with my daughter and I mentioned the word ‘stove’ and bewildered, she looked at me and asked ‘What is a stove?”😃
People of GOD, I bursted out laughing and literally couldn’t stop laughing for about 10mins…
She kept looking at me, and wondering why I was laughing so hard… I stared at her innocent face and couldn’t help laughing some more…😁
This Child really didn’t know what a stove was😱
For a second I thought about it and realised how strange the word “stove” would really sound to her because really, she has never ever seen a stove, never needed it since she was born, never ever encountered it and had no knowledge of its existence.
It immediately reminded me of a conversation I had with my mum just a few days earlier where I was telling her that I won’t be teaching my kids how to hand wash. This is because, I know that in their generation, NOBODY will be handwashing. Washing machines will be an essential, compulsory and normal appliance in every household, even more sophisticated ones at that, that would fold the clothes and put them neatly in your drawer🤖
What was now happening was clear proof of what I had said to my mom earlier. Imagine this child not knowing what a stove was, something that was literally in every household years back.
Now, with the advance of technology, cooking gas, electric cookers etc, literally no one is talking about stoves,
Remember when stone grinding, using a mortar, crushing and the likes were a thing? Who does that now? It’s the same way, a lot of things we are doing now will be totally extinct in the near future.
I know I’ve always been a futuristic thinker, but this drove it home for me and begs the question, ARE YOU IDEATING FOR THE FUTURE?
We all have great ideas, and dream of making BIG things out of our ideas. But then again, as practical, and innovative as your ideas are, are they going to lead you to build something that will thrive in the future? Are you positioning and developing skills that will ensure you thrive in the future? Is your business, nonprofit or social enterprise idea going to remain relevant in the face of the fast paced technological advancements we see nowadays.
I don’t have all the answers to these questions, however i believe this is a conversation we should all be part of, especially in these times.
